Open Shop Orientation + Tool Proficiency Check

Before using Bull City Woodshop’s Community Open Shop independently, all new Open Shop members are required to complete a one-time Orientation + Tool Proficiency Check.

This session is designed to make sure participants can safely and confidently use core shop tools without direct supervision. It is not a beginner class — it is a practical skills assessment for those who already have some woodworking or shop experience and are ready to work independently in a shared shop environment.

During the proficiency check, participants will be given a block of wood and asked to mill it so it matches a pre-fabricated sample piece of lumber. This process helps demonstrate your ability to safely measure, mill, and use multiple tools accurately.

Tools may include:
• Chop Saw / Miter Saw
• Planer
• Table Saw
• Router Table
• Drill press
• Band Saw

What We’re Looking For:
• Safe tool handling
• Comfort working independently
• Basic measuring and milling accuracy
• Awareness of shop procedures and shared workspace expectations

If you are not yet comfortable using these tools independently, you may be asked to complete one of Bull City Woodshop’s beginner or entry-level classes before gaining Open Shop access.

Important:
Passing this proficiency check is required before using Open Shop. Purchasing an Open Shop membership does not automatically grant immediate access to the shop floor.

Proficiency checks are typically scheduled once per month. After registering, you’ll receive a confirmation email with additional details and be automatically assigned to the next available Proficiency Check session. If the assigned date does not work for your schedule, please reach out and we’ll help reschedule you to a future session.

This is the required first step for anyone who wants to use Open Shop for independent projects. Our goal is to help keep the shop safe, functional, and productive for everyone.
